25 years ago today...

I started my nurse training, yes I am aware how old that makes me sound. At 18 years old I thought I was very mature and worldy wise, I was in fact a wee girl dressing up and playing nurses.

I trained and then worked in many areas of nursing from 1984 till 1999, it remains the occupation I did for the longest time. The things I learned will stay with me forever.

The skills and experience nursing gave me are too many to mention but I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the NHS for training me and giving me the opportunity of meeting some amazing people and allowing me to grow up and become me.

So thank you for teaching me to become a much more rounded and grounded human and illustrating with crystal clarity how incredibly lucky I have always been.

Bet it doesn't seem possible it was that long.

I have been working for twenty years now. I don't feel old enough. The grey doesn't lie, though.

Although I had a tough job in public service for 30 years and have seen things that would make your hair grey, there are a small number of occupations I would simply not have the courage to contemplate doing: being a miner, being a trawlerman and being a nurse.

I admire your dedication to that noble and caring profession.

Doesn't time fly - I've been teaching now for 16 years! Nursing is definitely a noble vocation and it sounds like it suited you well for a while. I have such respect for nurses and they job they do - I'm even in awe of our school nurse!

I bet you were grand at the vocation. 25 years ago, seems so long and yet just yesterday when I look back. Golden times though.

I'd like to think my bedside manner wasn't too bad for an old mum and having cared for a disabled mum-in-law gave me just a smidgen of what nurses must do repetitively and with care. I've no doubt you were a great comfort and asset to the profession.

It's a commendable job and wonderful profession but I'd find hospital nursing far too hot for me to handle - literally.

Always admired people who became nurses, if only because they deal with so much more nonsense compared to doctors.

RLS - it's social workers I admire, I couldn't ever do it

Lena - it was much less stressful then, I was actually allowed to nurse and not fill out endless sheets of paper
