Was it worth it?

This week I have the pleasure of my eldest beautiful daughter's company. EBD is off school for the Easter holidays and she's back here with me, tis lovely. She makes me feel I haven't completely failed as a parent.

On Saturday she met up with her 6th form chums, a lot of them she's known since we moved down south in 2000 and it's the kind of friendship where they all meet up and pick up where they've left off. There are about 10 of them, all went to university, all graduated last summer.

Of the 10, she is one of the lucky ones, her degree in primary education is completely relevant to her degree. Her friend Tom also has a job related to his degree, he's performing in LEGOLAND and his degree is in acting. All of her chums have jobs though, some in shops, some in offices, 1 working for the family business. My child is earning more than she would if she was teaching in the UK, she is most definitely earning a good living wage, in this she probably is the luckiest of them all at present.

Her friend has a degree in international politics, he is being employed by a company to go round knocking on doors asking people if they would like a local bus timetable, if they say yes, he fills in a form and returns it to a local council and then a council employee posts the bus timetable to them. As you are middle aged like me, your head will now be exploding at the waste of public money, you like me will have done the "WHY FILL OUT THE FECKIN FORM? ASK AND IF THE ANSWER IS YES, JUST HAND THEM THE FECKIN TIMETABLE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD"

You might have done it without the swearwords and cross shouty shreikery though.

But I doubt it

The more bureaucracy there is, the better. Perhaps he should be asking whether the person wants to fill out a form to request a bus timetable. The first form could then be sent to them to fill out. On receipt a new form could be sent which could be filled in for the timetable. And so on. Thinking about it, I wonder could you send me a form to see if I would like to fill in the comment box on your blog...

At least if the pensioner involved wants to discuss the possible implications of Russia's alleged intervention in Ukraine or good place to buy cheap Jaegerbombs then he's fully qualified.

Hang on a cotton pickin' minute, I'm really happy for EBD and all that, but did I miss a post? You've been to the Maldives and you're telling me about bus timetables?!

NB - I know, I make it far too easy for you

Andrew - indeed, that's probably top of their list of queries, where the cheapest jaegerbombs are

K - that's just how I roll, himself has blogged about Sri Lanka and I expect there will be a Maldives blog (imho the Maldives was overpriced and over rated to be honest)

It kills me to think of all the money spent on their education and then they can't find jobs related to their field. Good for EBD though!

Great that it's all worked out for EBD, but a bit sad for her friends x

As my son is due to study politics in the autumn, I am cheered to know what his employment is likely to be in the future!! Oh lord.

Oh dear what a waste, yes I was swearing at the screen right then! Better then not working at all though, despite the complete waste of a degree and council money. Fingers crossed they all find themselves more suitable jobs in the future.
We have one hoping to go to Uni in the autumn, the financial implications are terrifying!

by Jesus, what the feckety feck is going on with this world. where is the common sense? Can you do a degree in that? If not I sense one may come along any moment soon. Well done on EBD

Trish - he has 2 interviews for jobs that will use his degree this week, keep your fingers crossed for him. He has a first from a fabulous university so hopefully they will snap him up

Jay - absolute waste as you say but interviews pending for him. I hope you are saving hard, in 2 years time I will have both my middle and my youngest at uni, I am just going to pay my salary direct to them and hopefully get the bus timetable job in addition to my lecturing :)

Mrs W - no degrees in common sense, everything but I would imagine!!!
