Home alone

Last night we delivered Eldest Beautiful Daughter to the student house she will live in till next year. Mummy no likey, mummy really no likey. It's awful, really grim and it smells funny. It's a 3 bed terrace with a skanky bathroom and nasty old furniture but I expect White Company and Cath Kidston would be a waste of the grand a month rent the landlady's getting, wouldn't it?

I so should have gone into student housing, that would have made my fortune, low cost house stuffed with cheap nasty tat, and spend the rent money on my own house, it would have the White Company coming out the wazoo. Another fail on my part.

There has been intense and protracted negotiations re EBD's bedroom at this house, it's the biggest and the newliest decorated, EBD was really not keen to let it go but BBD is quite forceful and as she says, EBD doesn't live here anymore, just in the holidays. Let's just say it's been tricky, and I, as always have resisted making a decision. However by the time I got back, Beautiful Baby Daughter had moved all her stuff into Eldest Beautiful Daughters bedroom, had a bath and was wearing EBD's dressing gown (which EBD was gutted to have forgotten) and was having a hot chocolate out of EBD's mug (also forgotten) If EBD finds out she'll kill her and I won't have to decide who gets the bigger bedroom.

So today, for the first time in 3 months, I am completely home alone, no EBD floating around demanding to be entertained, TBS and BBD at school and just me. What will I do with myself all day? I wonder...

My Dad refused to let my Mum see the flat that I lived in for a few months in my final year, but I survived and didn't even notice how rubbish my surroundings were. Of course it helped that I was still refusing to admit thst I was very short sighted...EBD will be fine xx

Oh it brings back memories of a women's hostel I lived in for 3 months when I first moved to the city for my first job! The landlord was willing to take the money but wouldn't improve anything. The laundry was not functional, there were two bathrooms for 15 women and most rooms you had to share with a stranger. It was an old house which had simply had all its rooms turned into bedrooms. No one had bothered to updated the electrical wiring at any point so the fuses used to blow at least once a day. It was a miracle it never burned down.
But I survived and moved on.

I recommend wandering around in your pants, just because you can.

LFBS - oh she will, it's her flatmates I feel for, she's a bit of a tidy freak xx

SS - oh she'll be fine, it's just the contast between home and student digs isn't it? all part of growing up xxx

Andy - yep, wandering around in my pants and eating biscuits sounds like a good way to spend the day

Oh that so brings back memories! Our student housing was a condemned council block in Wapping with fungus growing on the walls and electric heaters which were known as 'Old Sparky' because if you turned them on you risked connecting yourself to the National Grid. My brother was at Uni in Salford, way before it became gentrified. When I went to his first student digs I wouldn't even sit down, it was so grim.

We've been visiting the various colleges trying to narrow down which ones Man-Child might like to attend. Every dorm room makes me cringe. They are SO tiny! And he'll be sharing that little cell with another person....I've no idea how well that will work out. Especially since he's an only child and has never had to share a room.

As for the day to yourself? Enjoy every minute of it!

Oh I blogged about the Queenager's departure ad nauseam last month. Still a big empty hole here chez moi, although I have two noisy boys to contend with.

The dorm rooms here (USA) are tiny, and they have to share. Fortunately, the Q lucked out and has the biggest room in the entire dorm. The beds don't even have to be bunked. And they're cleaned every week.

WG - I am hoping that you need to have some more kinds of checks on property compared to when we were students, our electrics were so bad my hifi (yes I am that old, thank you) used to come on randomly by itself!!!

Gigi - it's cheaper if you share a room but I couldn't inflict that on anyone, not even another student

NB - yep, party at aunties :)

EM - yep these rooms are cleaned weekly as well, not very well by the lokks of things but I found evidence of a hoover

So what did you do???? Landlords are such gems are they not. I am sure EBD will have it looking much better in no time.

Beware of becoming a student landlord. A colleague of mine bought a house for her child to live in at Uni, decorated and furnished it at huge cost and 3 weeks later, the child dropped out!

Student accommodation - they are oblivious to their surroundings as they spend most of their time socialising aka partying and very little studying. That's what the final year is for. Speaking as someone who works in this area it is a passing observation

More importantly what are you going to do with your time?

Libs - I will miss Hot Boy nearly as much as I miss her, as for the day off, some laundry, some cleaning, some reading, adventurous sort that I am

Sandi - all I want is for it to smell like there isn't a decomposing body under the floor, that'd do ! xx

CQ - isn't that just like the thing

Mrs W - fortunately I still have the other 2 to occupy me, I wouldn't know what to do with myself or my salary without them :)
