Empty nest

Beautiful baby daughter got the keys to her student flat today. It does tend to make you a tad reflective, I have had 23 and a half years of extreme parenting, a mahoosive chunk of my adult life and BBD has contributed quite spectacularly to the more extreme times!

This morning there was plenty hot water for my shower as she hadn't used the last of it for a bath, we have ALL the teaspoons and mugs and her room is as clean and tidy as I've ever seen it, fully visible carpet and everything. In her wardrobe is the stuff she hasn't taken to uni, the red coat she wore to church,  her signed school sweatshirt from both primary and middle school,  there is her year 9 prom dress and the one that properly undid me was her christening robe.

My lovely oldest friend auntielou had her beautiful youngest boy go off on Saturday, there may be others reading who have too. Much love to you all.

And a fine job you've done on getting all 3 of them to this point in their lives. You are a world class mother and I know how much work you have put in. You should be very proud of them, but more importantly, they should be very proud of you.

A - thank you, that's a very kind thing to say

Oh my, this really is the end of an era...but the start of another one. I have to say, though I was bereft with my empty nest last year, it's been ok...in fact, at times it's been wonderful, certainly for reconnecting as a couple. But, for now, this must be pretty tough for you x

Trish - we haven't actually lived on our own yet, I expect we will get all giddy with it, especially with full control of the house/teaspoons/fridge etc(we NEVER had any teaspoons when Lucy was around!)

It's an exciting time for both you and her. It's also a very nostalgic time for you in that your whole way of life is changing. Sending love.

Dear Auntiegwen I know how you are feeling with the empty nest thing, oldest boy went off to uni but he is coming home tomorrow (year 3/internship) for a short time to get his finances sorted and will be squeezed in to the tiny box room 5 days a week, so pleased to have him, his cheesy socks and disgusting bedroom mess back! Teenage boy just started college, I am currently getting used to the fact the house is full of grown ups now. Hope you get the job situation sorted and that hubby gets all that diy list done for you.

Betty - aw so pleased to hear from you x glad you have your boy back with you, my lovely boy also in year 3 of uni but I hardly ever see him, work and a girlfriend keep him busy! I am pleased to say hubby has started on the jobs now. Hope all is well with you and yours ps you never did tell me the story of your brother, the caravan and the married lady!!!

They usually come back don't they. Just a transition to a different kind of relationship. Strange, though.

It's both lovely and sad when they go...and absolute hell when they come back!
